CommentsI happened upon this site while researching the Hancock. The opening photo on your home page has my late twin brother, PH3 Richard J. Foster in the picture. The shot was taken only three weeks before we docked in Alameda. Thanks so much for posting it. Rich lost his life in a car accident only five months later.
We both had quite a time serving together on the Hancock. He joined the ship in January 70. The squadron didn't have a billet for a PH, so he had to wait for a billet to open in the ship's company before he could get orders there. It was a real surprise to see him arrive, as it was kept a secret from me that he was coming.
I enjoyed my time on the Hancock. She was a good ship with a good crew. Rich always had great things to say about the guys in the Photo Lab on the Hancock. He said it was a great bunch to work with. I will always remember my days on the Hancock with my brother. Thanks for saving the great memories for me with your photographs.

CommentsI served with Emil Zelinski in the A&O shop as an aviation and ordinance electrician. Then transfered to the after engine room. Many many good young men served in both divisions. It has been many years and I haven't forgotten them or the ship I called home for 4 plus years. I've tried for so long to find a website that would do the "Hanna" some justice. I think I have finally found it. I would love to hear from some of the guys I served with.

CommentsTo all who served on the Hana, Greetings. I had the honor of serving aboard 70 - 72 making two WestPacs. Hanna was always on line, even when the Big Boys were broken down in port, Hana was steaming from Yankee Station to Dixie Station and giving support up and down the coast. I believe our crew could Launch, Fly the Mission and Recover and Re-launch faster than any Big Boy Carrier could launch and recover. I was with what I believe are the best Sailors on earth and everyone did their part 150% of the time. I Salute you all and can with all honesty say, it was the best years of my life. I do miss it so.

CommentsHello again, I signed your log about a year and a half ago. Sorry it took so long to get back to it. I did just get an e-mail from you so thot I'd drop a line. I'm amazed at how much work you've put into upgrading your photo selections! Well Done, sir! In my travels thru other ships' web sites,I find the ones attached to the ole' one niner to be the best. I think it says something for the men who served on her. It's hard to find men who'll go that extra mile. I think that's why the Fighting Hanna never missed her commitments. Smooth sailing, my friend.

CommentsIt was my honor to serve on the old lady. We did things that no one else believed possible. The crew took this lady and transformed her into a modern fighting machine. Every man aboard gave his best and more to make sure we could Kick Ass and take names.
My part was small in the scale of things. I just had to find and provide the parts they needed to keep us running. The real Heroes were the people that kept the cats running, the engines going, and the electronics up.
As a Storekeeper, I just had to make sure they had the parts to do what they do.
They always amazed me with what they did with the parts I gave them...
The USS Hancock was a ship that would test everyone. She seemed to say " I may be old but with your help I can still be GREAT!" And she was.... Flight crews, pilots, engineers, and all of the rest of the crew "Made Her Great" AGAIN..
The USS Hancock CVA-19 Excelled in every task she was assigned. This because of the Captain and her crew... I am Honored to be a member of this elete group.

CommentsIn 1966/67 I met some chaps in Singapore from the USS Hancock, I was serving with the Royal Air Force at the time and these 3 chaps and a rew of us hit it of well and we were invited aboard the next day.
The memories of that day still ringer strong, the ship was on an R&R from Vietnam so the spirits were high, we had a good tour of the ship and I still have many pictures of aircraft etc.
the thing that I remember most was the fact that the mess was open 24hrs a day and the on board food was much better than tha RAF was getting on shore.

I served in the Air Gunner billet for almost three years. The ship made
two full length deployments to the South China Sea participating in combat
operations in support of the war in South Vietnam during the time I was
aboard. I left the ship for shore duty during a third deployment.

At the Hancock Mini-reunion at Branson, MO in Sep 2003, Wayne Erven gave
me Michael's CD of the 1967 cruise book. I packed it up and continued on the
road for about a month and didn't get around to looking at it until
yesterday. It was really a well-done cruise book and the CD presentation of
it was excellent -- very, very impressive. Would you believe, just today I
got a phone call from Ray Fink, who was in No. 2 Fireroom on that cruise,
and he was wondering how he could get a copy of a photograph of himself that
appeared in the first page of the Engineering Dept section of the cruise
book. His cruise book was swiped from him. I told him about the CD! He would
like to have one. I will be looking at your web site to see if it tells how
to order. If it doesn't, please advise me. As I said, I sure admire your
work in that CD. I'd also like to invite you to take a look at our
Association's web site, usshancockassociation.org/ and also would like to
invite you to post a link to it on your site. Hancock is very fortunate to
have so many shipmates who have developed web sites: Jake Jaccard, Inny
Cerbini, Don Mettler being some of the earlier ones, then Don taking over
the Association site, then Rob Lee and now I am finding out about your
excellent site. I have really enjoyed being a member of the Hancock
Association for the past ten years, and I am now President and have been
membership chairman since 1998.
